Associate Professor Germán Gieczewski and Korhan Koçak (NYU Abu Dhabi) have been awarded APSA'S Formal Theory Section Award for Best Article by a Non-Tenured Scholar for their 2024 article “Collective Procrastination and Protest Cycles” published in the American Journal of Political Science.

The committee writes:

"This year’s APSA Formal Theory Section Award for Best Article by a Non-Tenured Scholar recognizes a new approach to collective action, incorporating more dynamic concerns. The article, “Collective Procrastination and Protest Cycles” by Germán Gieczewski and Korhan Koçak, identifies a shadow-of-the-future concern in dynamic models of protest: the expectation that there will be a protest tomorrow reduces the incentive to protest today.  The authors point out that this can lead to surprising pathologies, such as having more opportunities to protest lowering citizens’ welfare, due to “collective procrastination.” This work identifies an inherent bail-out problem in models of protest and collective action more generally. The committee found the paper to be especially deserving of recognition due to its innovative modeling approach, important substantive insights, and its crisp and accessible writing."

Professor Germán Gieczewski’s appointment as a Tenured Associate Professor begins July 1, 2025.
