Public Opinion and Foreign Policy
Instructor: Naima Green-Riley
Even though U.S. policies regarding nuclear weapons development, foreign trade agreements, and diplomatic negotiations may feel removed from day-to-day life, both U.S. and foreign citizens often develop distinctive preferences regarding America’s overseas role. What factors shape the preferences of various constituencies within the American public when it comes to U.S. foreign policy? What impacts international views of American engagement overseas? Moreover, what research methods can be used to best capture public opinion about foreign policy? And what are the limitations of these research methods? This research practicum will help students to develop the skills to do their own independent research focusing on public attitudes related to U.S. foreign policy. Those with an interest in the attitudes of Americans on U.S. foreign policy and those with an interest in the attitudes of individuals in other countries regarding U.S. foreign policy are both welcome to enroll.
