Carles Boix is the Robert Garrett Professor of Politics and Public Affairs at Princeton University, where he teaches and does research on comparative political economy and democratic theory.

In his most recently published book, Political Order and Inequality (Cambridge University Press, 2015), he explores the factors behind the formation of the state and the extent of economic inequality. His first book, Political Parties, Growth and Equality (Cambridge University Press, 1998), examined the different means through which partisan governments manage the economy in a globalized world. In Democracy and Redistribution (Cambridge University Press, 2003), he describes the economic and institutional conditions behind democratic transitions and consolidations. Both books received the William Riker award for the best book on political economy. Carles Boix has also been the recipient of the Heinz Eulau award for best article published in the American Political Science Review twice. He was the co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Comparative Politics (Oxford University Press, 2007) and has published in leading journals such American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, British Journal of Political Science, Journal of Law, Economics and Organization, Journal of Politics, International Organization, and World Politics.

His forthcoming book, Democratic Capitalism at the Crossroads: Technological Change and the Future of Politics, will be published by Princeton University Press in May of 2019.

Professor Boix graduated in Law from the University of Barcelona, received his Ph.D. in government from Harvard and taught at Ohio State University and the University of Chicago before joining Princeton. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010. He is a member of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans and the Director of the Institutions and Political Research Group (IPErG) in the University of Barcelona.
