Politics majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad during the Spring semester of their junior year and/or the Fall semester of their senior year in any of the programs approved by the Office of International Programs. The Department will credit as departmentals as many as two courses in political science (or related fields) per semester abroad - one subfield requirement and one cognate, or two cognates. Students must meet with the Department's Study Abroad Advisor and obtain pre-approval for their chosen courses before their semester overseas.
NOTE: Students may not study abroad during the Fall semester of junior year as they need to be on campus to take POL 300, as part of completing the Fall JIW requirement.
Politics majors studying abroad are still required to complete their independent work according to the regular schedule. To facilitate this, students must confirm the Politics faculty member who will serve as their independent work advisor prior to their semester abroad. The deadlines for students to report their independent work advisors to the Department are December 15 [Spring JP] and June 1 [Senior Thesis].
Prospective Politics majors who wish to study abroad during sophomore year can also obtain credit for up to two Politics-related study abroad courses pre-approved by the Study Abroad Advisor. Note, however, that students cannot declare Politics as their major without having taken at least one Politics course at Princeton.
